University of Alberta

About the Council

The Health Sciences Council’s primary role is to lead and enable interdisciplinary research and team-based inter-professional education. These two areas comprise the essential academic support for interdisciplinary excellence.  Under the auspices of the Health Sciences Council, the Health Sciences Education and Research Commons, and the Interdisciplinary Health Research Academy support a broad range of interdisciplinary endeavour that is forging a path for the evolution of sustainable, safe, patient-centred health care in Canada, and the world.

The University of Alberta offers 43 health science programs in 8 faculties to approximately 8,000 students at the pre-licensure and graduate level.

The Council facilitates interdisciplinary learning, discovery and citizenship through leadership and collaboration across all health disciplines.

The University of Alberta's Vice-President (Research) , Vice-President (Academic) and the provincial health authority are also represented on the Council, as is the University of Calgary’s faculty of Social Work.

The Council has evolved significantly from an informal information sharing body to its current role as an academic leadership unit promoting and enabling interdisciplinary health scholarship.

The U of A is the only university in Canada to address interdisciplinary health scholarship through a council of equals. This approach allows faculties to maintain autonomy and develop their unique disciplinary strengths while addressing challenges and opportunities common to all.
